What is AFCI?

Arc fault circuit interupters are required by the 2010 National Electrical Code.  These devices protect wires and equipment from arc faults.  An arc fault occurs when there is a loose connection, damaged insulation, or improper wiring.  Arc faults can create extreme heat and are a major cause of electrical fires.  The arc fault circuit interupters will prevent the arc by shutting off the electrical circuit.

Most electrical panels with circuit breakers can accomodate arc fault breakers.  Arc fault protection is strongly recommended in all homes.
